''there is no greater fame for a man than that which he wins with his footwork or the skill of his hands"

Oct 09

We attended the ground control comp with some of the lads in October and they all did well. Scott took a bronze and got a beautiful double wrist lock when his opponent had him in half guard and thought he had him under control. Brian got two head and arm rolls which were superb. Danny submitted both his opponents, one with a shin compression and the other with a north south neck crank. The ref disqualified him for the first one but he (the ref) was a complete dick so it didn’t surprise me. The guy he submitted even said he was a joke and offered me his medal to give to Dan but we don’t want anything through default. Joe and Mark also had great rolls. Adam, what can I say, he came out at 100 miles an hour and his first opponent quit cos of the punishment he was taking, but he needs to slow down. His second opponent was a quality jits player but had to defend for 5 mins and never attempted a submission but the way it scores in these comps he lost on points. Alex took the gold and looked in complete control through out. He never went to his back once and dominated every bout. He has been a pleasure to work with and has improved steadily over the time he has trained. He has been training at the wolfs lair, but still comes down when he can. I wish him all the luck in whatever he decides to do and I am so glad he turned out for our gym that day.

I had to go to Bolton that evening to corner Phil Flynn who trains with us and also trains with Danny Ram at Mosside who is a great coach. Phil won again with a great heel hook ‘carny style’!!! Well done mate you’re a pleasure to have at the gym.           I almost forgot that jk junior competed aswell and again for someone so young was exceptional but when he has a father like Jimmy Kelly it is no surprise. Well done to every one associated with the gym and lets work hard and put catch wrestling back on the map!!!.

While I was there I had a chat with Jack Mountford who I haven’t seen in ages and he looks fantastic. He is a real legend over in the uk and his wrestling knowledge is second to none. He trains and teaches at Atherton fighting fit club which I think is now in Leigh. He has trained the likes of Darren Morris and Rob Broughton who are world class and again have a wealth of experience in wrestling. Jack entered two lads and one took a silver, well done lads.

Jake Kelly (Sept 09)

18yr old Jake Kelly has won his 6th contest. A welcome boost after a couple of recent bad decisions. Dave & John took Jake over to the Layton Institute, Blackpool, on Sun 6th Sep to compete in the Kirkham ABC show. Jake boxed at 70kgs, with just 3 days notice. The ref gave his opponent, Chris Simms of Kirkham ABC, a standing 8 count in both the 1st and 2nd round. Jake won a unanimous points victory after a skillful display. Well done Jake!

Summer 09

Its been a busy 2 months for the gym and membership keeps growing which is great!!!

15yr old Luke Baker who boxes at 64.5kgs,won his 4th contest on Friday 10th of July. Dave & Ed took him over to Lytham St.Annes for the Kirkham ABC show. Luke boxed Jamie Mitchell of Kirkham ABC. The previous 6 bouts had all been won by Kirkham boxers. Luke did very well against a confident, aggressive opponent and won a unanimous points decision.

Well done Luke!

We have been out competing and the lads have done really well. We went to compete in a uma grappling competition and came away with some medals and also went to Doncaster to an mma event run by Neil White and again 3 out of 5 won with the other 2 losing by decision with 1 result being very dubious.

Panicos also competed in Bolton in a thai boxing event under the guidance of Paul Tite who is a fantastic coach and needless to say he won in the first round by way of knock out!

Jimmy Kelly jnr. has been at it again! And won the junior ABA title for the 3rd year in a row, he is a talent .

Adam is out in North Carolina training for an mma bout on the 14th August. John Huskey who is my coach out there says he is looking really good and I hope he does really well as he deserves it. I myself should be going to New York in August to help John do a seminar out there. Of course I am taking Jimmy with me to carry my suit case!!! John is probably the best grappling coach I have trained with and hopefully the concept of doing carny style catch wresting will carry on growing and if it doesn’t it will be our best kept secret!!

I would like to thank everyone who has competed i.e. Panicos, Sam ,Danny, Paul, Scott, Dave, Rob, Ryan, Brendan and Jimmy.

Even if you don’t compete you are still welcome and I am sure you will be good for the gym as it continues to grow.

Finally I want to thank the coaches Paul, John, Dave and Jimmy Kelly snr. for making it all possible.

Ian and Adam hit America!! (April 09)

Just got back from North Carolina, where me and Adam went to train with “carny style” catch wrestler John Huskey. The trip went really well and we both learnt so much.

The system, if that's the right word is brutal and the finishing holds, the quickest and most effective I have ever witnessed.

As Billy Wicks explained, the submissions had to go on quick when he was wrestling on the carnivals because they would take on anyone and they wouldn’t know anything about their opponent. Therefore this grappling art has been proven at the toughest level. We were both bombarded with information and we have been working hard on the submissions since we got back. Meeting Billy Wicks was the highlight of my trip, he is a living legend over there and he blew me away with his knowledge. He is also a gentleman and has certified our gym as a “carny style” catch wrestling school under John Huskey's guidance.

Johns students were also really helpful and their skill levels were some of the best I have witnessed. The fitness levels of the wrestlers was unreal and what they call a warm up would almost certainly be a weeks hard training for a lot of clubs over here!!! Adam is going back in 3 weeks and has 2 fights sorted all expenses paid and wages, good luck to him. Johns students have been winning on a regular basis and Adam should learn a lot from them. You can check out Johns fighters on his website http://wnccombatclub.com (can also be found on the Links page)

John, thank you for giving your time up for a week to teach us both you are a good mate.

Latest Competition News (March 09)

Back in March Danny, Alex and Jimmy went to Doncaster to compete.

Danny’s opponent pulled out last minute, but these things happen. Both Alex and Jimmy won, Alex with a submission!!

The following day we went to Nottingham where it was Adam’s turn. He controlled the fight and in the second round he all but finished it when the other guy spat his shield out and turned his back. The ref however had other ideas and let the guy get his breath back whilst they cleaned his shield which was a joke. The ref later admitted he made a bad mistake and he should have stopped it giving Adam the win. On a brighter note Luke Barker had his first boxing bout and won on points! He weighed in at 66kg and fought really well. The match was in Crewe and the organisers did a very good job.

Well done to everyone who took part you are a credit to the gym.
